At Speak Greek, we believe in making valuable information accessible to as many people as possible. Recently, we had the opportunity to contribute to this mission by volunteering to translate the "Doorstep Crime" leaflet for Friends Against Scams, an initiative that empowers communities to take a stand against fraud and scams.
Why This Translation Matters
Doorstep crime is a serious issue that affects many vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly and those who may not have English as their first language. Scammers often pose as legitimate tradespeople, charity workers, or officials, gaining trust to deceive victims into parting with their money or personal information.
By translating this leaflet, we aimed to bridge the language gap and help Greek-speaking communities understand the risks, recognise the warning signs, and know how to protect themselves or their loved ones from fraudulent activities.
What the Leaflet Covers
The leaflet provides essential advice on:
- Recognising common doorstep scams, such as rogue traders, fake utility workers, and fraudsters pretending to be from banks or government agencies.
- Steps to take if someone suspects a scam, including how to report incidents safely.
- How to support vulnerable individuals in identifying and avoiding scams.
By making this information available in Greek, more people can benefit from clear and practical guidance to stay safe from doorstep criminals.
The Importance of Language Accessibility
Many community members, especially older generations, may struggle with English-language resources. As linguists and educators, we understand how crucial it is to ensure that essential public safety information is accessible to everyone. This project aligns with Speak Greek’s broader mission to promote language inclusivity and support Greek-speaking individuals in the UK and beyond.
Get Involved
Friends Against Scams offers training and resources to help people identify and combat scams. We encourage everyone to explore their work and consider becoming a Scam Champion to raise awareness in your community.
If you know someone who would benefit from the Greek translation of the "Doorstep Crime" leaflet, please reach out! Let's work together to keep our communities safe and informed.
